center console swap

i have a 96 gt with the ashtray and POS fold-out cupholder in my center console. im in need of more cupholders and i dont use the ashtray except to hold coins. and i dont use the cigarette lighter. i have heard of people swapping their 94-97 center console for a newer one with cupholders.

will a 2002 center console fit in right?

i want to keep my power outlet in the shifter bezel but can i also connect the power outlet in the storage bin to the old cigarette lighter connections?

yes, your center console will be almost identical.. the console around the shifter will stay along with the bezel. if you want to make another outlet in the center console then you'll just have to run wires.. fairly simple.. the fit is identical..

Re: center console swap

the only issue is the color wont match, in 99 they went to dark charcoal (not black as in your 96 or tan depending on your interior color). Then in 03 they did medium charcoal etc etc. You can buy paint from a restoration site like cjponyparts.com or something similar and paint it.

I would go with one perhaps from an 01+ that has two up holders, also 98 mustangs had two cup holders as well I believe and the color would match.

thank you for saving me the time of asking this question. i will do as suggested and buy some blk plastic paint from jeg's and call it a day.

i was also told you could just swap the cup hplders if you are willing to trim out the ashtray..but i like get'n a whole center console idea better.

Re: center console swap

the center consoles are cheap!! I swapped the one in my 94 with one outta an 02'.. bolted right up, i just had to extend some wires for the cig lighter. and that is easy enough to do with the center console out... also I kept the Magnetic top from my 94 on it, if you looked hard enough you can tell a color difference.

The 94 had a magnet that held the top of the center console shut, whereas in 98? They went to a clasp kind of top that is really cheap and breaks easily.

so i finished the console swap. it fits in pretty good. i popped the coin holder out and put my foglight switch there. i decided to use the old harness from my 96 console, i just taped up the connections for the cigarette lighter. and i didnt wire the power port in the console bucket. it was a little frustrating to fit the main harness connector between the cupholder and the ebrake assembly. and there is about a one inch gap by the back seat, i guess 99-04 had a taller driveshaft hump in the back. but i think it was definitely worth it
