Re: Hard Launch Kit

03/04 cobras have a HD cross bar from the factory, where the 99/01 cobras did not. If you want to launch hard you need to drop the IRS install all of fulltiltboogie's items and such or go wtih a solid rear axle.

Re: Hard Launch Kit

the IRS just has a lot of rubber mainly. The extra braces are to keep it together from all the shaking and binding that takes place due to all that crappy rubber having issues.

Its an amazing setup with nice bushings and such

Re: Hard Launch Kit

o...ok, i c. i just know i loved it in my tbirds. v8 power, but handles and drives like a front wheel drive. that whole drive system was ahead of it's time and under appreciated.

anyway, so im guessing you get lotsa wheel hop with the irs set-up? i may have been putting down 300 at the crank wit my bird, so i know it's no comparison to 500 at the wheel. i just thought it may be a good swap since they are plentiful, everyone hates them and are getn rid of them. not to mention i dont race my car, ive never owned a set of d.o.t.'s or slicks.

also, wut's the ratio from the factory for the irs?

Re: Hard Launch Kit

the 03/04 cobras have 3.55 gears in an alum chunk (not cast iron).

stock they wheel hop, some worse than others. Verts tend to be the leader in this with the extra flex they offer.

Now that I have lowered mine and have stiffer springs with wider tires its much better, it would still do it at the track I bet though.

For about 600-800 bucks you can do some great things to it though, ive seen one put in a fox before

CobraTom, Yes this unit is from RPM. Do you spend some time at the 1/4 mile drags? Ultimately I will be going to drags about 2 to 3 times a year.

hey thanks for your input!!! Yes I have some wheel hop and I have 597rwhp so its can be pretty intense to take off sometimes. Are you suggesting getting rid of IRS? I dont know if I want to do that.

Re: Hard Launch Kit

OK guys, I think i might try the launch kit first to see if that helps. i also am in the middle of installing the H&R ss springs (front done, this Saturday do rear). So I think I will see how it is after that is done! Then maybe send it over to Full tilt boogie and spend the $600-800 that SpectorV had mentioned.

CobraTom, let me know what the difference was in your Terminator! Was it night and day difference?

Thanks

no, no..i wasnt suggesting you get rid of it. i meant i was think'n of get'n one cause noone wants them. i know a guy who had 3 layn around his shop that he had converted for costomers that didnt want irs anymore. i personaly love irs. but im tryn to hit 500rwhp by the end of the summer, and maybe irs isnt the way to go. i got 453 at the wheels..boxed upper and lowers wit spherical axle bushings. wit a 2700 stall. and things can get real interesting if i dont watch myself. the wheels stay on the ground, but it spins like crazy. they use 7.5 irs for 5-600hp miata conversions all the time. so i figured i would be ok with an 8.8. irs. like i said, i was impressed the way my tbirds put the power down. but i will leave my 7.5 in rather than have worse traction issues wth an irs.

also, u never told me irs gear ratio

No problem! I love giving rides to true Mustang enthusiasts. 600hp is almost ridiculous. Its hard to keep traction at the start. Highway though, I can break your neck. Its awesome!

i dont listen to all those guys talkn bout dropn 1500 in the block before u even get to the good stuff. ford components are resileant, im proof of it.

Have you been to the track yet? What does it run? What do you want to run? You may be able to turn the numbers with a set of good tires. With the wrong tires, suspension won't help much.

Re: Hard Launch Kit

I have not run mine yet. Just go it last fall. It has spent more time in storage then out cruisin. I would guess with the set up before was mid 11s. I want to get in the 10s. I really got to get some more wheel time. With this much HP it could run low 10s. Just got to get the HP to the ground.

if you plan to run 10s or that is your goal drop the IRS and upgrade all of the bushings etc etc or put a SRA in lol, dont break a half shaft or two to figure it out

11's Is not too bad. Slicks will get you there. To get into 10's, you will have to drive the **** out of it. I got 574 at the wheels and 11.50 is what I'm shooting for driving straight to the track. Have tranny problems right now but 11.5 should be no prob.

He shifted early on the last pass. Gotta get all of 4th gear. 3rd is a long gear. It's all about seat and track time. Don't get discouraged your first time to the track. It will take a few trips. You gotta make passes and change launches and shift points. Racing a clock sucks.

I am going to practice a ton this summer! probably gonna go thru some tires!
