Trying to make an informed decision...

Hi ya'll, I'm actually a die-hard Chevrolet lover, but I have an appreciation for automobiles in general as well. I recently came across this 1998 GT, and read a lot about them and have been reading the forums for hours and hours, on top of what I already kinda knew about them.

Here's a little about the 'stang in question:
Mainly a good base to work with and build up. Rebuilt Borg-Warner T-56 5-speed tranny(stock tranny, right?), aftermarket 3/4 shift fork, 3.55 gears, Big Bear Brake kit(all four disc brakes), Tockico adjustable racing suspension all around, Ram Air intake w/ K&N filter, accufab upper intake manifold , magnaflow true duals with turn-downs, cobra r functional 4 inch cowl induction hood, aftermarket green with black face boost and fuel pressure gauges in piller, 12 inch sony gt series subs with new D Box and 600watt kenwood amp, pioneer mp3 player with usb and aux input, Cobra rims and new tires all around. Staggered, 17/9.5 in front and 17/10.5 in rear.
And of course, all GTs come with the 4.6ltr V8 single overhead cam. Stock they're roughly 225HP@4400RPM/290ft/lbs torque @ 3500. And still get 25mpg on hwy, and 17 in city, correct?
With a PI header swap from a 99-04 GT, I get an additional 60~HP and it only costs about $300. So then I'm pushing 285HP/325torque at the wheels without really sacrificing MPGs, right?

If I do get it then I plan on making a few small adjustments like 4.10 gears, Eaton Lockers, and swap out the pulleys for some lighter ones..

Oh, and the Mustang has rougly 85,000 miles on it, and asking price is $5,500. I could probably come at him with cash for about $4600, but wouldn't feel comfortable going much over $4800.

What do ya'll think?

Pics of interior are on my phone, but it's in great shape.

Re: Trying to make an informed decision...

welcome, first I noticed you mentioned the T-56 transmission, thats not correct. That is a 6 speed transmission used in 03/04 cobras etc. It will be a T-45 5 speed transmission.

A PI swap will get you around 285hp but thats at the flywheel, it will be 17-18% less than that at the rear wheels.

With the stock gears (2.73/3.08) you probably could get 25mpg on the highway at 55-60mph but with 3.73 or higher it wont be nearly that good.

If the car is in good shape mechanically and looks wise I think 4200-4800 is a good price. The radiator crossover on the upper intake (well perhaps its actually the lower intake on those cars) is known to crack and is replaced with a non plastic area right there, look for that. It in the front of the motor I think on the lower intake. You can google it.

Re: Trying to make an informed decision...

So it's a T-45, I must've misread it. Thanks for catching that!

So even with the 3.73, do you have an estimate on the MPGs? I mean.. I'm driving a lifted Tahoe right now that gets 8MPG on HWY, so anything is an improvement. Lol.

So on the upper/lower intake I should look for a metal piece in place of a plastic one?

And what about the clutch? How will I know if it's going out or if it's fine? I would assume if the clutch is not too easy or hard to push in, that's a good sign, right? Haha.

I have a pi head 2000 gt. With a 3.90 gear I get about 18 city and 26 mpg on highway. I have a t45 and it has taken a fair bit of abuse. You have 3.27 gears right now. These mid motors love to rev and I get decent mileage when it's revving at 2400-2500 rpms do don't let the revs scare ya. And forget 5w20 for oil 5w30 is what you want. You have around 190 rwhp us with the pi heads have about 230 rwhp. Buy the tuner gears combo from American muscle and get a minimum of 3.73. I suggest 3.90s or even 4.10s cause these motors are great revvers. Forget a cai it doesn't help our cars. The 4.6 loves to rev so get out and drive er. And welcome to the club

Clutch is easy to test.... Get the car moving about 20 mph then put it into 5th and floor it. If revs climb faster than accelration it's going bad

Thanks for the heads up. I think I'm gonna wait a while and look for a newer GT. I really like the 2001-2003 GTs.

Re: Trying to make an informed decision...

My gf loves her '02 GT, definitely nice cars, I drive it all the time, and the only thing I don't like about it that I like for her though is the damn traction control. I have to turn it off when I'm driving, It just irritates me.

Re: Trying to make an informed decision...

She backed into the damn fence that goes around my driveway a few days after she got it. Had the door open trying to look behind her, hit the door on the fence, bent the sh** out of the latch, so I had to shim the striker to get it to close.
My sister won't ride with her, and I won't either. She's always doing burnouts on her brand new tires. I was the idiot that showed her how to do that though, lol.

My opinion, either go fox body 5.0 or go with 2001 and up 4.6 gt... For the price of a 89 gt you can get a bangin 5.0 or with an extra 2k find a nice 2001+ gt... But then again you know what they say about opinions...

I meant to say more part available, for some reason it jut seams easier to find parts for the late 01 to 04 than 99 and 01... Even easier that '96 to 01, maybe it's just where I'm looking but that's what pushed me into the 04 with out doubt was the fact I could find more parts than for my 99... That's all

Re: Trying to make an informed decision...

Thanks for the heads up. Now I guess I just gotta find a pretty good deal on one. I'm not too wild about buying from a dealer, honestly.. They never know anything about what they're selling and tend to charge a little too much. Haha.

I'll keep scanning the classifieds, if anyone does run across something then please hit me up. I'm pretty wild over those 5.0 Foxbodys but would rather the 4.6 GTs of 2000-2004. :]

What part of south Louisiana are you from? I know a few people who sell them. Might be able to help you out. I've been a gm and ford guy too. I've owned my favorite gm cars and favorite fords. Wish I could have kept them all.
