timing chain ?'s

hey guys, i'm gonna do the pi swap soon. should i replace the chains? have read the ford timing chains are really long lasting. some say if no noises and such don't change them, but replace the guides & tensioners. engine has 151,000 on it really no problems but a little smoke sometimes from the valve seals. don't really have any questions about the swap itself, have been doing ALOT of research. anyway, whatever you can school me on is much appreciated. thanks...

If it were mine, I would replace the chains. They aren't that expensive, and if they do fail in the future you're going to have to tear the engine back down to replace them. That's just me though.

Re: timing chain ?'s

4.6 ??? I'd do the chains while its apart . there's a million bolts on that timing cover so why do it again later ? replace them now while you've got it apart .

Depends on price. I've never had to replace chains on a mod, now a sohc four liter that's a different story. I don't really think its necessary personally but to each his own. Also guides don't really need replacing and neither do tensioners unless the guides are worn our the seal on the back of the tensioner is done. Not a bad idea to go ahead and get the parts and if you don't need them you can always return them.
