No Brakes = Sad Nicole

Lost my brakes last night driving home from my boyfriend's house...had to baby it for 30+ miles to get it to the shop.

Anyway, here is my question:

I have been having problems with my brakes for about a year, they never felt right. I have never seen fluid on the ground or anything but the parking brake light came on last week. I lost the pressure to the brakes today but was still able to stop (but only after driving ridiculously slow). My brakes have constantly made a squealing sound (I blamed it on the new pads I got last year that were semi-metallic).

Could I have a leak? I wasn't able to check the master cyllinder yesterday to know how low the fluid was (obviously low though) or to see the color of it.

Or could it be just bad fluid?

Not able to check for low fluid? Thats kinda important,I would start there first. How often do you check the fluids?

i just had the brakes redone last year so i didn't think the brake fluid would be an issue, plus everytime i get the oil done, i have everything checked

Ya never know. Its a good place to start instead of the more expensive areas.I had a El Camino that had no leaks also and it was the master cylinder that went bad.Same issue with the failing brakes.

Sounds like what happened to me a few months ago. Just one day the brakes got real spongy and on the way home they went completely out. It was the master cylinder. Funny part was when I lost them completely when I hit the brake petal it felt like the car gained speed. The mind is a strange thing.

Re: No Brakes = Sad Nicole

START with the fluid , if its low you have a leak there for your lossing pressure = little to no brakes !!!! just because you dont see a leak doesn't mean its not there ..
if your fluid's good , its either a Master cylinder or brake booster giving you problems ..
i would say ABS also ,that could cause problems but usually the brakes still work with abs prob's .........

My guess if it not leaking then the seals with in the Master Cylinder might have gone bad. When you press on the brake pedal does it firm up and then slowly sinks down?
