2001 5.4 Cobra...

I live in a very small town and until recently I have been the only one with a Cobra. My cousin told me about a buddy of his at work that put what he thought was a 5.4 out of a 2008 GT500 in his Cobra. He described the car to me and I went on about my day. The next week I saw a red Cobra in the same parking lot as me with the guy and his buddies hanging out. I pulled up because they all had their msutangs and I figured I'd blend in. So I went to check the car out and he told me about it as I checked out the interior and his body mods. Then he popped the hood. About 1.2867seconds after he opened the engine compartment I noticed something was terribly wrong... The guy had taken a 5.4 out of a Lincoln Navigator and thrown it in the car. And I say thrown because that's what it looked like he did...the job was very unproffesional. BUT the whole point of this story is to ask the simple question of what everybody thinks about it???? Personally I don't view it as a Cobra anymore. He just has a Navigator in a Mustang's body. Everybody else argues that it was simply a modded Cobra but I strongly disagree and wish he'd take the Cobra badges off.

Nope. Not a cobra anymore. And the fact that it's a backyard job is painful. Now it's a new edge with IRS and a navi motor. Frankenstein

Glad to see I am in the company of some people with some sense. Everybody I have talked to has bitten my head off for saying it. And I agree if you can do the job correctly by yourself fine, but don't be sloppy about it.

Mod motor is mod motor, they are more or less the same. That 5.4 4v from the navs sounds like a great swap to me just like doing 2v 5.4 swap in a gt. If it was done poorly, that's one thing but done right, I think its a great idea. My next mustang will be a mod motor car. Been thinking about selling one of mine to get into one.

Re: 2001 5.4 Cobra...

While I understand your frustration, and the fact that it was poorly done under a shadetree, you also have to consider the history of mods. If you wanted more out of your car, and there was nothing available "FOR" your car, what would you do? CORRECT! You'd take whatever you could find, and make it work. As for everyone still claiming that it's a cobra....meh.....I say bull****!

Re: 2001 5.4 Cobra...

What year is his Cobra and what year was the donor Lincoln? I don't know why you would make the switch, the value of the car just dropped. The stock 5.4 is going to make 20 hp less to start with even if it is a 4 valve from a later model Navigator. There are so many mods you can do to the 4.6 to get more power, it seems dumb to put that motor in a Cobra.

As for whether or not it is still a Cobra, the difference between a Cobra and a GT is more than just the motor. (I know thats hard for you guys who just like to go fast in a straight line to comprehend that.) What he has now is a Cobra with a 5.4, unless he also changed out the suspension, brakes, drive train...

Mod motor parts are interchangeable. I know a two valve everything is interchangeable except the intake. So if you could get a good 5.4 intake, all your good 4.6 heads and cams can be used. I believe, done right it is a cobra. No different than boring and stroking.

if its vin says its a cobra then its ok to have cobra badges on it, if the vin doesnt say cobra its not right. This goes for any car regardless if its 50000hp or not.

just keeping it real lol, Its not like the Cobra is the best anyway, there are far faster cars its just what should be on there and what should not. Dont pretend to have something you dont, be proud of what you have.

clones 100% fine but the cobra badges or GT badges of what ever should NOT be put on there, all but those.

Re: 2001 5.4 Cobra...

to me they dont look any better than anything else~ the only reason to put them on is to pretend to be something its not heck just leave the running pony like Mach 1's have those look great to me.
