I have a 2000 gt with a 4.6. It cranks but doesnt turn on. I changed my fuel filter then started it then it smoke a little then died out. Im thinkin it could be the fuel pump or am i wrong?

Re: Mustang cranks but doesnt start

If the fuel pump is out then it wouldn't start at all. First thing I would check is the battery or spark plugs. That's simple. Then you can work on figuring out if it's the pump or not.

Battery is fine. It wants to start but never turns over. Just keeps cranking thats all.

Re: Mustang cranks but doesnt start

It ran before you put the fuel filter in, right. Then you replaced it and tried to start the car?
Try turning the key on and off several times with a few seconds pause while it's on. This is recommended to do after the fuel system has been de-pressurised. Then try cranking it.

I had that problem before... I'm trying to remember what we did to fix it. If I remember, I'll be sure to PM you.

I think all that was wrong with mine was that the battery was going bad and the terminals were corroded and it wasn't getting a good connection.

I can't remember anything else being the matter.

When my fuel pump was going out, it would run for a time then randomly die. And whenever the pump finally died, it wouldn't crank, it'd just turn over.

Spark? Fuel? Air? There are way too many things. We are just shooting in the dark. You need to have a mechanic look at it.

Try checking the mass air flow sensor. Maybe it just came lose or it's starting to come unplugged.

Also have a friend tap on the gas tank with a hammer while you try and start it . If it runs with him hitting the tank then you have a fuel pump issue. The float inside the pump gets stuck and sometimes this will work.
