Question Underdrive Pulleys/ Cams

so I realize its about an 8-10hp gain with a tune.
But my question is would you suggest going ahead and getting them along with everything else I'm doing and then getting a tune. I'm spending a lot already and just wondering if its worth the 200.

One more question, are cams, valve springs, adjustable cam gears; how much rwhp gain am I looking at after installed and tuned?

Thanks in advance!!

Depends on the cam. You could get up to 30 hp with a stage 3 but if you got a mod motor you can only go to a stage 2 without a notched piston. Mod motors suffer from piston/valve interference. A stage 2 might get you 20 hp. And they are gonna cost you 1000 bucks with parts and install at least. And udp will get you 5 hp

Re: Underdrive Pulleys/ Cams

I read an article on the review of the Comp Cam's stage 2 cams (the valve springs are required and to tune the heads you need the adjustable cam gears) and the average looked to be around 45hp gains from them. Def getting new cams just wondering if the pulley's are even necessary. For 200 bucks I'm not too worried about the small gain.

Why ask if you already know then. I guarantee you there is no chance a cam swap I'm stock heads is giving you 45 hp. Sorry. You would have to get 1500 bucks worth of porting done and spin it to 7500 rpm.

Re: Underdrive Pulleys/ Cams

It just really depends on the cam your getting. If you are geting a cam with a high lift, then you are going to want to get the springs with it. The stock spring may last awhile, but in the long run you want it to last, so get springs that can stand upto the day-to-day use. And do you have your heads ported and polished? If you don't then you are not getting near the HP potencial (SP?) of the cam. And yes, get the tune after all your mods so they run right. I have a 2000 GT mustang pushing 420HP but i have put 6000 dollars into the motor its self!!!

I agree. Wondering why you're not going with forced induction first.

Re: Underdrive Pulleys/ Cams

the cam is something you replace with heads/intakes not just by itself. Its all part of a system where together it works better than with just one item by itself. Its hard to say X part will give Y output~ it all works together.

Re: Underdrive Pulleys/ Cams

just save up and do heads/intake/cams at the same time if 96-98 for sure as the PI swap has great results.

do the other stuff for now but save all that for the same time

Re: Underdrive Pulleys/ Cams

its an 04 and I've heard the PI heads were just as good as any aftermarket ones. It has a CAI intake on it and I ordered a Stack Racing TB and intake spacer and was just gonna port the stock plenum on it to match the throttle body. Is that a bad idea?

I ground out my stocker. I suggest goggles. It didn't really help so I bought a pp plenum and that seemed to get me thru the gears a bit quicker. I love the horse and I didn't want to remove it. If you are putting a higher lift/more duration cam your gonna want a bigger plenum and anything bigger than a stage 2 need notched pistons. And you need at least stage 2 to make the swap worth the 1400 bucks it costs to buy and get cams installed. Unless you are installing them then you save the 800 in labour. By the time you add up all the little stuff you gotta do to get any power out of it it's cheaper to boost it. I did my homework. I was gonna to a 4v swap till I did the math then thought h/c/I til I found out what labour was gonna be. In the long run boost is cheaper and you get real power

Re: Underdrive Pulleys/ Cams

yeah the one I found was a 96 GT without PI heads and it got 21rwhp before even tuning it. Doesn't look that hard to actually install myself in my driveway...maybe time consuming but not very difficult if you can turn a wrench...or does it require any type of tuning before you put everything back together?

That would be awesome. Then if another member want to do something similar you have real world numbers to offer. Nice
