02 GT what cams should i get?

I have a 02 GT that just has bolt on stuff and want to put cams in it. What should I get for street/strip driving. I'm pretty good with mechanics and doing things myself, I built a 306 but I know these engines are different. Let me know what you think or have gone with doing.

Well, Patriot, Trickflow, VT Blower Cams and CompCams are a few brands out there.

Usually there are different stages that you can buy. For a 2v with bolt ons stage 1's will probably boost numbers and still take advantage of the stock block. You could probably see high 12's with stage 1's, longtubes, gears, exhaust (midpipe), intake and larger t/b and maybe some aftermarket control arms. This isn't a bad street/strip setup and won't break the bank.

Any higher stage and you're going to want new springs, better flowing heads and intakes as they tend to pull in the higher rpms. Plus the stock shortblock probably won't allow that high of revs so a new block may be necessary.

Regarding cost to gain, I'd say after cost of cams, tune and dyno you'd have a good start for either a forged bottom end or blower.

Remember that a mod motor is am interference engine. The piston and valve occupy the same space at some point in the rotation. Anything bigger than stage 2 needs notched pistons as well. Mod motors once you do the math is less costly to boost than to do anything else. Buy a turbo and call er done. You will have to tear the whole motor apart to fit a cam that gets you any real power. And your gonna have to spin it to 8000 rpm to reap the reward of all your hard work.

Well I'm more a street driving guy, I don't go to the strip all the time. I mainly want it more for the sound of muscle than for quarter time results.

if you are tearing down to the cams you may wish to consider heads as well~ sure its more expensive but its double work later on in some areas.

modular motors will not give you the lope sound like a pushrod motor dose when you swap cams remember in a mod motor their are 2 of them plus alot of other maintenence parts to swap out so it can be quite expensive for little gain
