Noise from rear end

Ok so here's the deal. My 02 gt is making more noise than usual. I know the TOB is bad so I'm going to replace that should I replace anything else while I'm in there? Also my car is making noise from the rear end on deseleration mainly in 3rd gear and below it sounds like a whining almost like a SC. I'm assuming it's either the gears or the bearings. But before I spend a bunch of money rebuilding the rear end I wanted to know if anybody had any other opinions on what it could be. Thank you

Re: Noise from rear end

you may have just a fluid leak and its low. The reason it only does it on decel is when you apply the gas it puts pressure on the rear end and can raise the pinion angle etc etc. Many rear ends whine and its not hurting anything~ but get the fluid level checked and if it still does it you can pop the cover and see whats up.

For the clutch you should very much consider doing it all as it all has to come out either way.

clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, pilot bearing, throwout bearing, bearing retainer sleeve (if grooves are cut in it), check input shaft play for tolerance, check pivot ball stud, check shift fork (cheap so replace it) etc

Re: Noise from rear end

yea, its good to clean it all out anyway. Could be the bearings going bad as well. Its not something you want to take out and put back in (gears/differential wise) as its got to be setup correctly.

So, my friend just did his rear end in a 99 3.8, to a ford racing carrier, and 4.10's, with an auto, and now has a squeeks. I suggested either a shim, bearing, or u-joint, or even maybe a crush collar. Any help or ideas what it may be. It happens when hes on and off the throttle, so obviously its not created by the torque. I had also told him, when those bearings are going out, it may not squeek, but rather have a grinding sond, cause they spin so fast. Any ideas???

He had everything mapped, said his axle shafts looked good, and that he used the same bearings...all help will be great. Thanks.

you cant just pop in gears you have to check backlash and many many other things such as wear pattern, I wish it was just as easy as bolting it up once they wear in a bad pattern its time for new gears.

Re: Noise from rear end

good info, most just assume they slap right in, if thats not the case then not sure... they say some brands just whine more and Ford Racing sold out to Motive which are known to whine.

That must be magical backlash measuring paint then because I'm a mechanic and know that you need a gauge : )
