Good idea?

My nephew wanted me to ask your opinion on this. He's thinking about trading even his 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 198,000 miles for a 98 Mustang GT with 150,000 miles. The Mustang needs a main rear seal. Owner says he puts a quart every 2 weeks. Is this hard to replace? Would you trade even up?

Re: Good idea?

I'd do it. You have to drop the transmission and remove the flywheel to get to it.

Yeah my nephew was disappointed when he found out. He put his Jeep on craigslist today hoping to trade for a Mustang or get enough money to buy one.

Re: Good idea?

My rear main seal leaked on my 1996 V6. I just took the engine out and put a bigger one in to fix it

I just thought I'd update you on my nephews plan on getting a Mustang. He's getting one tonight. I'm not sure the year. It has a manual tranny and it's a GT.

Re: Good idea?

Cool, the old pushrod 5.0's are beast engines that can be built up nasty.

I'd also mention to him to take off those chrome fender flares...car would look much better imo...but it's his car, if he likes them I guess they stay.

He said those fenders flares are the first thing to go.

So far he found that the tranny is leaking. He's going to pull the tranny out and replace all of the seals and hopes that works.

Well even so, if that's it plus some basic maintenance/tune-up costs than he's still ahead imo.
