upgrade the coils?

So this past weekend I started tearing into the car. Everything on the car is original and most of it needs to be replaced. Im in the proccess of replacing the coolant system and I plan on changing out the coils. My question is if its worth the extra $40 to get MSD coils over oem replacements. Right now I'm basically just restoring the car. So no mods are being done at this time. I am planning on modding the car once I get everything running right so I'm leaning towards the upgraded coils. Just wanna get some opinions about it. Thanks.

If you're planning on doing them anyways, I would do it now if it fits your budget. it'll make your car run better too.

Re: upgrade the coils?

Lol. Getting the same mixed results I got from searching the web. If oem is fine when do you actually need to upgrade your coils? I do plan on modding after I get done fixing the little stuff. Shouldn't I go ahead and upgrade the coils and wires since I am already replacing them?

Re: upgrade the coils?

there are so many POS coils out there (mainly for the COP design) that OEM just work better. For the 3.8L your coils need to be replaced im sure once they get higher up in miles, thats fine... just use the OEM ones as after markets wotn give you any performance gain. I wouldnt just go to autozone either, try to get them from tousleyfordparts.com

Re: upgrade the coils?

I have a 96 GT...not a 6 cylinder. The msd coils are only $18 a piece more then stock. Everything I've read about MSD was good.

Re: upgrade the coils?

if its only that much more you should be fine, just dont spend a ton for aftermarkets as they wont help. I think everyone gets caught up in how good the car runs... but forget to realize the OEM ones that were on there were VERY old and in bad shape usually.

Re: upgrade the coils?

I can agree with you on that point. A bonus for the MSD coils and wires, they're all pretty and red.lol Makes the engine bay look a bit nicer.
