I seen u had 3.73s the gears make ur speedometer off like that. You need a tune.

They can fix it when you buy a tuner. They reconfigure your computer for the gears.

It depends which tuner u get. I have an sct tuner with free bama tunes for life. They ask u 19 questions about your stang and they send you tunes. But if you add a mod to ur car you have to call bama and you download the new tunes from ur computer to the tuner. But the first time you dont need to download from ur computer.

Someones got stuff from American muscle lol. Sorry to thread jack but how do you like the bama tunes?
As far as the speedo, it depends on the tuner but most have the option to select it from an option.

I love the bama tunes. It took me less than 15 minutes to download new tunes after i called them for new tunes. And yea the sct tuner with bama tunes will fix you up and give you more hp gains.

you have a speedo gear, its probably just messed up, if you have not replaced the rear end gears you just need a new gear, not sure which you have but they are cheap

Re: inaccurate speedometer on 1996 mustang gt

3.73 it wont ever read 100% accurate as the speedo gears have teeth and the current one they recommend for 3.73 is like a 23 tooth or something~ it wont make it right.

You MAY can do a speedcal unit, its like 100 bucks~ plugs in between where the VSS sensor (speedo reader) on the transmission is and the computer. Snaps right in. You set it up and it takes the input from the transmission (speed) and modifies it to send to the computer/gauge. This calibrates it to read correctly.

Its what I did on my 01, just make SURE your 96 is compatable as some will and some wont work.

Mustang Parts & Accessories Superstore - 1800Mustang thats where I got mine from back in the day~ may have to give them a call to find out about it, its just a little box thing.

Re: inaccurate speedometer on 1996 mustang gt

yeah i probably should give them a call.. so even if i get the tune it still wont be accurate? because i want to get the tuner but if that wont fix the problem then i might just hold back on that for a while until i get more mods because all i really have now are the 3 73 gears.

Re: inaccurate speedometer on 1996 mustang gt

tune can only modify 99+ vehicles, not pre 99 due to its cable driven on those not computer controlled so a tune wont help you speedometer calibration.

Mine is a 97 model and is electronic not cable. So 96 will probably be the same. You can change to either the 23 tooth gear like I did. Cost round 20 bucks. Or you can pay for a tune.

Re: inaccurate speedometer on 1996 mustang gt

the speedcal will work on cable setups as well I believe but cant remember, worth a call as 23 tooth wont be accurate, and you cant do it in the tune pre 99

The 23 seams accurate enough. But maybe my tire size makes it closer to accurate.
