96 gt wont run for crap. help

ok i have a 96 mustang gt and 3/4 of the time it will idle in neutral and park(its automatic) only idles about 1/2 the time in drive wen stopped at like a light or stop sign itll waver from around 800 rpm to 500 but rarely die. goes down the highway smooth once you get to speed. but on acceleration sometimes it wants to sput then take off if u punch the gas too fast. usually will hesitate around 2500 rpm then shift up and take off. idk whats wrong iv ran gas treatment replaced fuel filter replaced plugs and air filter the coils are six months old and and so r wires what to check next?

Try cleaning your iac valve and cleaning your maf sensor.

I had this same problem, received the same advice, problem solved. Hardest part was finding my T20 Safety Star Drive to take the MAF out.

Check for Vac Leaks aswell, if you dont have a vac leak clean out your iac and MAF. I redid all my Vac lines because mine were starting to dry out (I also have a 96 GT) that used to have the same issue. All these things caused me to stall out being stick it was super dangerous because on off ramps it would stall out. I also changed plugs and wires wich stopped alot of it.

Re: 96 gt wont run for crap. help

Just get some MAF cleaner spray, take the whole piece out of the intake ducting, and spray it....no need to remove the star screws.

Also, clean the IAC. Cheap and easy.

If that's not it, find the vacuum leak lol

The safety star drive tips are $6 for a full set at auto zone. Might as well buy them while you're picking up the MAF cleaner. Seriously, the whole piece is cleanable and probably needs it.

Let us know how if it works!

You realize that you can take the hose clamp loose and spray the maf from inside the tube right?

Sure, that's ONE way of doing it and I'm sure it works just fine. But it doesn't hurt to actually take the MAF out and do it right. With it out of the tube you can inspect it and clean it from all sides. We're talking about a $6 tool, not hundreds of dollars.
