Auto to Manual swap?

Sooooo, this weekend. Im just getting out of steak and shake in my 1997 Mustang GT convertible. Put the top down and im ready to go. One problem.... I cant go into reverse and my car is stuck in second gear... TIME FOR A TRANNY REBUILD... $1500 bucks down the down the drain... ORRRRRRR...

I was told it is possible to change the car to a manual. I guess all the holes for the manual transmission and clutch assembly are there because when the cars are in the factory they make it so they can make the car either an automatic or a manual...

So I was thinking. Because my tranny is basically ****ed up anyways, how much would it cost to convert my transmission to a standard. I went to a transmission shop and they said they could hook me up with a t5 tranny for about the same it would cost for the rebuild. He was pretty vague on the price he gave me. So I was wondering... What should I do? Get my transmission rebuilt and put an upgraded shift kit into it or should I change the transmission to a manual? Also how much do you think it would cost to get the swap done?

Thanks everyone for your responses,
Brandon

Yea sounds about right. You will also need a new driveshaft knuckle and a new wire harness and yea the shifter. I put a t45 in my car. Are u gonna do the swap yourself or pay someone? Thats if u dont wanna get ur auto rebuilt.

Is a t45 better than a t5? But I heard getting the driveshaft resized was easy, there's a place right around the corner from me that can do that. I have a guy that says he would help me if I would do this myself but im almost leaning more toward paying someone. Then if anything goes wrong i know where to go other than beating myself up over whatever goes wrong. hopefully nothing bad will happen but if it does i dont want it to be on me.

You do not need to get the driveshaft resized. Its the piece that hooks from driveshaft and it goes in the tranny. I think its called a yoke but it looks like a knuckle. You just change it out and ur good to go.

The swap was pretty simple. The hardest part for me was swapping the pedal assymblys but other than that it was pretty easy.

Yea James did his, definitly +1 for it as well. I went from auto to manual and manual is so much better. Your in more control of the car and you get a better feel for the ride and it allows you to enjoy it a lot more
