Should I leave the cats on or off?

I just recently purchased a 2004 Ford Mustang GT and I was debating wheather or not to remove my cats ? What do you think I should do? btw I live in Florida and we do not have to go through emissions every year.

Get a nice sounding cat back and o/r xpipe. X pipe evens out the sound and will eliminate the cats.

Re: Should I leave the cats on or off?

What if they put the O2's back in the mid pipe? that should stop the check engine light to come on right?

You have 3 options to get rid of the check engine light. Mil eliminators they just plug in you can get them on Americanmuscle.com I think there like 70 to 80 bucks.

You can also get non foulers they just recess the sensor back a little bit and although not as reliable they worked on my friends 2003GT. probably the cheapest.

Or you can get a tuner to simply shut them off. This is the best way to do it but also the most expensive. A performance shop could probably do this for you but not a clue what they would charge you.

Your car will not run any richer or leaner with or without the eliminators. Your rear O2 sensors (post cat) simply monitor the condition of your cats, nothing more.

The oxygen sensors before the cats are there to monitor the oxygen levels in the exhaust so the computer can calculate the proper amount fuel to dump to obtain the proper air fuel ratio (14.7/1) 14.7 parts air and 1 part fuel. This is the desirable fuel ratio because your cats operate at there peak efficiency.

The most common are wheel speed sensors going bad. They could be intermittent also hence why the light goes out. Both the traction control and antilock brake system rely on these sensors to work properly which is why the traction control doesn't work either. The sensors monitors the rotational speed of each individual wheel. If a wheel were to lockup while braking the sensor would pick it up and communicate it to the abs pump. Then the pump will relieve brake pressure to that particular wheel preventing lockup. Traction control will also monitor the speed and if it picks up a wheel slipping the computer will cut back power from the engine. What you need to do is put a scantool on it and find the trouble code and determine what wheel speed sensor is acting up. Check the connection and the wire alot of times debris can brake the wire. If everything checks out it's probably the sensor. What part of Florida are you from?

@REDGT04: your sensors could be fine. I had the same exact problem a month ago and what it turned out to be was that the front & rear tires were spinning at a different rate therefor throwing the speed sensors off because I had just purchased new rear tires with a little bit thicker sidewall. Even if the sidewall size is the same on the front and back on the tire, having wider tires on the back can cause the tire to bulge out making it thicker which was exactly what had happened to me.

I saw the pics and it looks like a clean car and a lot of potential. To really make it look nice really quick you should lower it with some H&R Springs give it a much nicer more aggressive stance. And definitely get the Mach 1 lip. The lip really makes the front flow with the rest of the car and it looks awesome. Highly recommended upgrades for not to much money. You can find both of these on www.americanmuscle.com. Awesome website I buy most my stuff from there.
