Possibly too much freon in the system. It's too hard to compress therefore making it hard to turn the compressor.

ive heard a few people complaining of this but both my 96 and my mach 1 are not affected by the AC at all... Except the mileage... that goes down lol.

The AC does take away a small amount HP, my dad had a 76 Charger and could feel a difference with and without it on going up a hill

Try to cut down on using it. I know, easier said than done. Mine doesn't seem to be great on it. It runs the radiator fan.

Example: when I pull onto the highway, I turn it off and just use the blower, until I'm completely up to speed. Then full blast she goes until it becomes a meat locker, then she's off Max A/C and back to regular on 1, then as I exit the highway, I switch the A/C off and let it blow till the coils are no longer cool and then windows down.

Ac today is not that big of a deal. You waste more gas mileage at 70 with a window down then with the ac. As for the fan all cars with ac (electric fan) the fan cycles as well. I can live with a few less hp when my ac runs. Have the freon removed and replaced with fresh. Ac units should never be topped off. Water and contaminates accumulate over time causing poor cooling. It should be serviced over time. If u have to add then a leak maybe present.
