The 96-98 engine.

Give me your honest answers here. My mechanic keeps telling me to stay away from these gt's because of head problems? Have any of you had these problems? I don't plan on modding a gt too much, maybe just exhaust, cold air, tuner. Thanks in advance.

Get a 99-04 PI motor. They make more power and will be more reliable IMO

I figured if I did find a 96-98 GT, that I would eventually swap it out to a 99+ engine once it died. But do they really have problems?

What your mechanic might be referring to is that the '94-98 GT did not put out as much power as the '99-04... The heads are different!.. If your car was well maintained then it should be very sound!..

Actually the heads in general do have issues with blowing out plugs due to the shallow thread depth. In my case I had a fuel injector on cyl #2 that was running lean. But it does effect all 2v heads and I believe there was a tsb on it as well.

94-95 is a push rod 5.0L not a 4.6L. The HP number is 215HP 278TQ for the 5.0L and 215 HP 290TQ for the 4.6L.

Personally I'd not buy a non PI 4.6L

I've had a 96 GT for 5 years and its got 400+k km on it. Only problem was a cracked intake manifold. Change the oil and clean the tb once a year. I do burn a bit of oil but its no big deal. There great cars.

Also the radiators and not sufficient in the 96s so it caused alot of overheating/blown head gasket problems

I've never had a problem. I use royal purple purple ice coolant additive and even in the full heat of summer with the ac on driving hard I don't really have an issue. My mach 1 does run cooler than my 96 tho.

My Gf has a 98 Gt that has 191K on it no issues other than a cracked intake manifold.Replaced with the aluminum crossover intake still runs decent,But what can you expect for one with 191k on it.Won't run like a new one but still runs strong.

I have a 97 GT. Bought it with 63K and put over 40K on it and overall it's been good. Runs great and pulls hard still. Any repairs that had to be done were once it crossed 100,000 miles or close to it. But as long as you do the required maintenance stated in the owners manual you'll be perfectly fine. As far as issues, usually the issues from 96-98 also carry to the 99-04, except the radiators in the 96s, and the valve stems seals tend to go faster in the 96-98s and cause a tiny bit of oil to pass through. Other than that they're both good.

Performance wise the difference in power between the 96-98 and the 99-04 is down to the poor flowing heads in the 96-98. Also, in the 96-98, the power begins to drop off after 4500 and revs to 6000 while falling on its face, whereas the 99-04's power peaks at 5250 and stays steady to the redline. That could be the issue your mechanic was talking about as well.

What do you have planned if you get one? And you want an auto or 5-speed?

I think your mechanic was referring to the manifold that cracks on them. My 98GT cracked but not until 120K.

I was gonna pick up a '96 GT, but I ended up passing on the deal. It was a 5 speed, but my mechanic convinced me to have him build me a fox. :0 Too many problems came from the '96, according to him.

Haha, it'd be hard to. He's worked on my car since day one. Gave me a deal on everything that's happened. Heck, I didn't pay for everything he did for me. He's a good guy. But one if those typed who prefer carbed applications than efi.
