Stock 04 GT, what should i upgrade?

I want to start upgrading my mustang, and I'd like to spend around 1K, maybe a little less to start out. What should I do first?

Re: Stock 04 GT, what should i upgrade?

Performance or cosmetic?

Performance:
Exhaust, gears, underdrive pulley, maybe a new upper intake if you have higher miles since the stock one's prone to crack.

A short throw shifter if you have a 5spd...makes a huge difference in driving.
If you have an auto get a tuner...the adjustments in shifting/firmness are worth the price alone.

I'd say these are the most effective "performance" mods for that money...CAI, plenum, t/b are okay mods but don't really show much in gains by themselves.

Cosmetic:
Wheels, lowering springs, misc. exterior upgrades - chin spoiler, grille delete, shorty antenna, fuel door, bumper inserts etc. the list goes on.

Re: Stock 04 GT, what should i upgrade?

I'm looking for performance, cosmetic I have black FR500's and aftermarket lights. Thanks for the info! I saw a chip and electric supercharger, are those any good? They claim to have decent HP gains but they're fairly cheap.

All those electric supercharger/turbos are a bunch of garbage...false advertising and a scam to get your money.

Chips are even a thing of the past..handheld tuning and dyno tuning are much more effective ways of tuning your car.

Here's a link to a popular handheld tuner from American Muscle...just to give you an idea.

Re: Stock 04 GT, what should i upgrade?

Yeah I saw those, but the CAI and tuner combo is around $600. I'd like to keep it around $6-700 and get as much as I can. I was thinking about getting under drive pulleys, 4.10 gears, and a CAI.

You're going to want the tuner either way after those mods...to make the exhaust, CAI, and udp's work together and more effective, as well as adjust your speedometer after the gear change.

Should I get the intake, gears, and pulleys or intake and tuner?

Re: Stock 04 GT, what should i upgrade?

I'd honestly get the gears and tuner...

~150-200 for the gears, 300-500 for the install, and $379 for the tuner. Most cost effective and performance effective pair.

The nice thing about the Bama tunes from AM is that you get free tune for life, so as you add mods - exhaust, CAI, intake, etc. you can send in a request for an updated tune at no cost.

Re: Stock 04 GT, what should i upgrade?

I had a tuner from them at one point, it was the chip and it randomly made my car shut off while I was driving. I'm assuming the plug-in ones don't have that problem?

Re: Stock 04 GT, what should i upgrade?

Ya I never was a fan of those "plug in" chips.

The handheld tuners are much more user friendly and I haven't heard of any issues with them. The only way there could be issues is if the tunes were programmed incorrectly, you alter parameters incorrectly, or you pull the cord out of the OBDII port while the tuner was re-programming the car.

Oh okay. For the gears, would new bearings be mandatory or could those be upgraded later?

Re: Stock 04 GT, what should i upgrade?

I guess it really depends on the condition of the stock bearings which would be based on mileage and wear. But since you're tearing that area apart it would be worth it to install the kit...AM offers the rebuild kit for $75, well the worth the cost to have peace in mind.

Yeah I have those in my cart. Right now I have the 4.10 ford racing gears, tuner, and bearings and my cart is at like $640.

Re: Stock 04 GT, what should i upgrade?

Alright, make sure to get the custom tunes for that tuner..DON'T buy the pre-loaded tuner...you want to be able to customize 3 tunes for your car.

Also, is your GT an auto or a 5spd? I only ask because you'll want to base your gearing decision off that, as well as a few other factors.

Don't forget paying someone to install the gears. Depending on mileage a diff rebuild with new clutches would be a smart investment. Do the rear end once. You'l thank me later

I was just going to mention that..a tlok rebuild kit wouldn't hurt either. Do you have a specific shop or professional to install the gears? I'd establish that connection before ordering eveything. Install is critical and requires great attention to detail and measurement.

Any mishaps or incorrect installs will cause grinding and unwanted noises from your rearend.

It's an auto. Ive looked around for a manual but can't find any so I figured I'd do some upgrades and transfer what I can when I find another car

Re: Stock 04 GT, what should i upgrade?

Alright, with a solid tune and those 4.10 gears you'll forget all about the 5spd, lol.

General rules in the community are 3.73's for manuals and 4.10's for autos. With the 4.10's you might lose .5-1.5 mpgs max on the highway, but you might pick up a .5 or 1mpg in the city.

The better distributed power throughout the powerband is well worth the slight mpg loss imo.

If u break open the rear end i would rebuild the tlock and get new bearings like everyone has said... u dont wanna go in there twice if u dont have to. Going the gear route is gonna prob cost around $600 give or take if u do all that needs to be done. I dunno if u have done it or not but exhaust is always 1st on my list ... power wise ur not gonna really feel anything but i have to havr my stang sounding good first and foremost!
