Quick question about RPM's

When i turn my car on from a cold start, the rpms will stay at 1500. Then maybe 30 seconds of idleing, it will drop to maybe 800. Then when i just Barely tap the gas, it goes up to 1500 or sometimes 2000 and then drop slowly... Then wait a few and back to 800. Anyone tell me why that is??

My car has been doing that lately also, what it is exactly idk, maybe someone else can chime in.
It might be the Idle air control valve but I could be wrong

Its how the cars tuned, when o got mine retuned it jumped to 2k and went down and sat at 800rpm. Its really no big issue, so my .02 says your fine!

I have 373 gears so all i do it lay my foot on the pedal and i have to shift. It doesnt take much for me to rev to 1500 rpms its just a power thing. Its not bad and if you had an exhaust it sounds bada**

Well does it have a low roar when ur at about1800 rpms? Stock mustangs are silent but exhaust is common. Is it an auto or manual?

To check the gears, jack up the rear end and mark the driveshaft. Then rotate the tire 1 full rotation while counting how many times around the driveshaft spins. To check the exhaust just look for any sort of name on the muffler. If its aftermarket the. It should say something on it.

Re: Quick question about RPM's

Sounds like the Stang is tuned but Dashpot is not set. i have the same problem but i know that I have to calibrate the idle. Dont have the time yet though. Lets say you set the idle and the car stalls, means its set too low. 850 is about right. Idea is when foot is off gas, clutch is depressed car rpms drop quickly to idle unless you shift quickly and so on. difficult matter. still chewing on it since i tuned.

Re: Quick question about RPM's

Its a manual. Its also a 96 body with a 98 V8 in it. it would Have to have aftermarket exhaust I'm guessing then.. maybe? I will check the gears and everything tomorrow or friday as thursday is the beginning of my weekend.

No 96-98 were the same body style and motor. Exhaust and everything else will bolt and hook right up

True however the 96 came stock with a v6 so there would Have to be some aftermarket mods wouldn't there? at Least the exhaust

You would have to redo all the suspension to handle the power. And a bigger radiator alternator and beef up everything or else you wpuld tear the s*** out of a stock v6 set up

You can buy side exit kits off the Internet, I'm pretty sure they just bolt on after the mid-pipe. A shop could do it pretty easy I think.

Re: Quick question about RPM's

My car also has the idle problem. I'm not sure if it has stock internals or not, but the exhaust has definately been modified. It's loud. I also run rich most of the time, so that may have something to do with it, and I won't know further until I get an SCT tuner. Some tricks to help it may be to increase air flow with a cold air kit (if you do feel you're running rich), help the ignition with good plugs and upgraded coils, or get a tuner to help it settle down. I know a lot of people think that if your car came with a V6 and was upgraded to a V8 that you have all sorts of work to do.. and sometimes this may be true, however, when it comes to mustangs I've found that typically ford will share suspension set ups, and even tranny's between the V6's and V8's so as to keep production costs, and repair costs down. The only real difference between the two (besides engine size and weight) should be just the ECM, and wiring harness. Don't quote me, but that's pretty typcial. Hope this helps.

I know im running rich and today im getting my fuel pressure regulator so i can swap it out. Im runnin about 60 psi at an idle and 70 full throttle when it should be 30 and 40. Andi got new spark plugs for when i do this swap but no coils. Ill pick those up today. Thanks for the info!
