OBD codes

check engine light has been on a while, just wondering what others thoughts are. p0420 p0430 p0304 and it was c1264 then i ran the car for a little bit and that code went away now its c1200. im not even sure where to start with this car. i love the thing but it was never taken care of and im getting all of the problems. paid 4800 for it and should have just spent another 1500 and got a better car.

Sorry if this is a crummy response, but thats a lot of different codes. I'd start with a google search on each. Just do something like "P0420 Mustang". There's a good chance a few of those codes are related.

Start with the easier problems. Electrical diagnosis can be extremely difficult depending on where the fault is. I'd check the spark plug and coil on #4. If the plug looks suspect, a haynes manual or a google search will show you what plugs look like under different circumstances. It is possible that the misfire, if really bad, could give your O2 sensors a fit. How does the car run? is your ABS light on?

Re: OBD codes

it was running fine until i sprayed engine degreaser then rinsed it off. now every once and a while it likes to shutter on acceleration. abs is on and traction control off and cant be turned on.

I had the same misfire code on mine. Mine was a coil pack that went bad and that is why your shuttering on acceleration. Learn from my mistake if that does turn out to be the coil pack and not the plug. I replaced one of mine and a week and a day later a second one went on me. I found out later you should really change them all at once. I could be wrong but that's what I was told and it is a little suspect that they both went in a weeks time. That's probably what caused your O2 code as well.

Check the battery cables. I had a battery cable loosen up on me and the battery would die over night. One morning I jumped it and the computer kept resetting causing the needles to go crazy and the car to stall out. I had to do all I could to move the car 100 feet into a parking space and it turned out to be just the cable coming loose. Originally it would take a couple days for it to die but it steadily got worse.

Re: OBD codes

Look at it this way. You washed the engine down and THEN got the codes. Possibly got water to short the coil on #4 which will cause the O2s to go crazy sometimes. Water will also short out other sensors. Try to make sure everything is dried out, clear the codes, and run it again.

Re: OBD codes

the 420 and 430 were always there, the others are the ones that showed up after washing it. ive tightened the battery but it still happens. if i unhook the battery before leaving it set a couple days, i hook it up and it fires right up.

Re: OBD codes

Do an online search for DIY correcting the 420 and 430 codes. It will probably lead you into a bunch of forums. Then you can see what others found out to correct them.
