410's

Installed 410's awhile back and the rear end howls when I let of the gas and want to fix it. Is it just that now that it's broken in, it needs a few more shims or what is causing the noise and is it hurting anything that will be a major issue in the future

If they don't set the backlash correctly then they will "howl." You have to take it apart, make sure everything is ok, and re-do the install.

+1 on the backlash. I believe you have them too loose??? It's been a while since I've done gears, did you install the gears yourself?

Re: 410's

install was not correct, might be to late to fix (this is all assuming gears were new when installed). If the wear pattern is established they can "try" to fix it but it may never be right without replacing the gears and starting over. This is why everyone stresses getting a good shop that backs their installs and knows their work to handle it its not fun having those noises.

Gears were brand new ford racing 410s, me and my brother in law installed them, he has done gear swaps on 16 different cars over the past few years on his own and others. It only makes the sound when I let of the gas but when I'm accelerating it doesn't make it. I want to know if this is fine since it's not affecting performance or will the rear end fall apart in the future

How loud is it? Mine has a very faint whine. I have had them in for about 4 years and they are fine.

You sure it's the gears and not the engine braking since it's a lower gear than stock? My car does it when letting off and it's the engine/tranny slowing the car down, didnt do it when I had 3.08 as much but 3.73 does it more kinda feels like someone's puttin the brakes on

Re: 410's

How long ago were the gears installed? They didn't do it when they were first put in? You broke them properly? I had frpp gears installed by a shop. They howled from the get go on decel. The shop tried to tell me it was normal. I called ford racing. They said definetly not normal, don't even drive the car. I took it back to the shop. They tried to tell me it wasn't that bad. Drive the car for 500 miles. I told them I called ford racing and they told me to not even drive the car. All of the sudden they decided to replace the gears with new ones under warranty. These do not howl. Improper install was the culprit not the gears.
