Cams

Hey I don't know much about cams but I'm thinking of buying some, I have a 1999 gt with flowmaster, CAI, 4.10 gears, sct chipped, what do you think? I use my car for mostly daily driving

Should I put my money into something else?

Re: Cams

Cams are rather expensive and are gonna need the use of new beehive springs if you go stage 2+ and also a re-tune. It gets pricey but there is definitely gains to be made if you get a better intake as well.

I would probably be better off getting headers and a x pipe or something?

Headers and an x-pipe are a much cheaper and safer way to get a good sound and honestly you don't even need new headers because stockers have plenty of flow unless you go LTs... And while a cam's lope is sex, basically, it is rather expensive. As all good things are.

Re: Cams

I have similar upgrades on my 2004 GT and I was looking into cams as well, and if it were easy everyone would do it. First you'd have to pick a cam, (I'm not saying you have to use Comp, just an example) and then with almost any cam upgrade you would want too change the springs and retainers. Also because yours is a 99 it probably has Windsor heads that have a pressed on cam gear, so you have to get new cam gears too, you can tell what heads you have by how many bolts in the valvecovers; 13/14 = Windsor, 11 = Romeo. Then you have to get it tuned some wheres because if you are like me and bought an SCT tuner from AM, they can't/won't write tunes for it. I spent a while finding all this out so I figured I'd pass it on. If anyone has anything else to add please do, I most likely missed some things.

Pretty much summed it up. I was too lazy to write it all up. Lol

Thanks guys, I'll just look into getting a full exhaust system , by the way has anybody had problems with there headers becoming lose? My mechanic told me just to keep stock manifolds because you will have to keep tightening your headers ??

He's probably talking about the header gasket not being normal with aftermarket headers. Honestly you may have to tighten them once or twice after you install... But they should set rather quickly.

I don't believe you need a tune if you go with a mild street cam

You need a custom tune because of the differences in elevation, the air gets thinner the higher up you go so you need to get a custom dyno tune to compensate for it.
