Spark Plug blew again!

Fourth cylinder on the passenger side. I stopped driving the car before any further problems and immediately recognized the sound. Pulled the plugs and only one was messed up but it was pretty bad and had oil on the plug. Can I just replace the plug or do I need to try to clean it or what?
Here's a pic of a regular plug and the damaged one.

Re: Spark Plug blew again!

That's blow-by, I think. I've heard people say they have had their piston rings all line up and create some blow-by. It could also mean your rings on that piston are having some issues. That, of couse, is it blow-by is what's happening.

Re: Spark Plug blew again!

I was told along time ago that oily spark plugs is from blow-by. This is when the combustion air/fuel/etc is not fully combusted and some of these products are getting into the engine. I've also heard that bad PCV valves can cause this too. I'd google it for more detail, cause I'm not a mechanic. Here is the first thing I found as far as definition...

BLOWBY

Hope that helps some

I see..

Well I changed the plugs and I still hear the miss although its not as loud. The car still vibrates something crazy.

Any other ideas?

Also, could be that your coil on is not working. That could explain the rough running. I heard that the tuners can read fault codes, but I heard they can read other stuff that doesn't create fault codes, maybe there is some information it could provide. I don't have a tuner or I'd plug mine in and check it out to compare with what you are seeing.

Just thought about the PCV pre filters. Check out the American Muscle link and read the description. That what your experiencing?

Picked up a new coil on plug a whole ago and installed it. No change. Put my tuner on it and no DTCs at all.

I'm stumped. I'll read that article when I get home.

Tomorrow morning, with the car stone cold, snap the gas and check for blue smoke is all I know aside from yanking the heads off. If theyre bad enough you'll smoke on a warm motor. Also make sure your oil level is correct, PCV is clean (you should hear the check valve in it rattle if you pull it off and shake it), and swap that plug to see if you foul another one. Oil on plugs can be a headache.

Re: Spark Plug blew again!

Are/is a leaky valve seat(s) what causes blow-by, or is that different?

Re: Spark Plug blew again!

Bad valve seals can cause oil to leak in the combustion chamber and foul plugs, also if you have a bad piston rings. The best way i know how to check is by doing a wet and dry compression test and compare the readings

Blow-by is when you get oil from the crankcase going up past the piston rings and into the combustion chamber. Bad valve seats won't cause blow-by.

So if it's not the seats then it's the rings?

The problem is money. It seems expensive.

A dilemma however is that my apartment lease isn't up until August so I still have to pay rent even though I'll be in a different state for a few months.. It really sucks.

Are they paying you BAH? If not you need to tell your recruiters to get on the ball

They will. But my rent is $600 a month. I get $1000 for camp. Camp is two months. It won't cover rent.

Re: Spark Plug blew again!

that doesn't sound right, unless they do it differently for new recruits. even on the low end you should still be getting around $600 a month. I though CG bootcamp was 13 wks?

The problem is accessing the rod ends and being able to torque them back down in the car.

Pulled all the plugs and one had its tip completely gone! So that's two misfires. Perhaps that was my problem! I had fixed one misfire but had another. Makes sense since when I replaced the first plug the vibration and noise went down a bit. Gonna replace all the plugs now. But before I do can everyone take a look at te picture and tell me where the hell the tip went? Is it down in the engine now or could an exhaust valve have blew it out? Would it be okay to try to keep running the engine?
