Tire size and rim size 96gt

I I bought this car as my first mustang and am wondering how to tell what the car is "supposed" to have for rims and tires. I got it with 17" rims that had been taken off of a cobra mustang (mine is not a cobra). On the front the previous owner have 235/45/zr17 tires and in the back they have 245/45/zr17 tires.

Now the speedometer has been about 10mph off (over) since I bought it.

I know the 96 GT came with 16" rims but had an option for 17"

No idea whether this car was bought with that option or not.

So can anyone help me figure out what should be on my car? I have to replace the rims and tires and would prefer to get Whatever is supposed to be on it.

Have you checked your gear ratio by any chance?

Those are after market. 1st if they came with the car the speedo wouldn't be off cause for would have programmed it for the 17s and the option wouldn't be 17" cobra wheels would have been mustang rims those kind of look like cobra R wheels

They are cobra R wheels. The previous owner put them on.

I have not checked the gear ratio, how would I go about doing that?

I would keep those rims and just wrap them in new tires if you need rims for some reason look on Craigslist for some stock ones. I would put 16s or 17s

Yeah I have to get new rims because the previous owner apparently drove it for a while with the rear drivers tire loose and the holes Re all chewed up on it. So I was wondering If I should look for 17 or 16 inch rims. Since the spedo is fast I'm guessing there is something else wrong besides tires since even if it had 16" rims before the spedo should be slower with bigger tires, but it's just the opposite.

I think the speedo problem has nothing to do with that, it shouldn't throw it off by that much which it will throw it off but not by 10mph.
Your best bet is to look on Craigslist for some stock rims or some other mustang rims like fr500s or built rims.

Jack up the rear end and mark a spot on the driveshaft (simple way is to use whiteout) rotate the tire while counting how many times the driveshaft rotates. I'd guess you have either 3.73s or 4.10s if your speedo is that off.
