Question replacing manual tranny... looking for answers!

I have a 2002 gt that i just bought! beautiful car and i knowingly bought it with tranny issues. I bought an extra one with the car for 400 bucks! The current one is grinding bad into 3rd and sometimes refuses to go in so i just skip it! Is this just a syncro or do i need to install the new transmission? looking for advice on which path to take and the costs either way! since i already have the transmission i hope its pretty cheap to replace! please help!!

That definitely sounds like a bad synchro. You could just replace it but if you don't have experience tearing down a trans could be easier said them done. If the other trans is in proper working order just swap them out then you could take your time and tear apart the other one and fix it and maybe learn a few things.

I like that idea!

I dont have much experiance tearing down a mustang that far though and im in california and the car is in ohio right now. Military brought me out here... how much would it cost for a shop to drop the old one out and put the new one in as long as i supplied the part?

It shouldn't take but 4 or 5 hours and depending on the mileage you might want to have the replace the clutch, pilot and throwout bearings while they are in there.

Definitely replace the clutch pilot bearing throw out bearing and either resurface the flywheel or get a new one

Ok ill look up the costs for those parts. I had a contour svt and it cost me over a grand to replace the throw out bearing and slave cylinder in that!!! I'm trying to get a clue on how much this is all gonna cost. Anybody know a good quote on how much this is gonna cost?

A Mustang Trans is much easier to remove than the contour svt alsotakes about a third of the time
