My dd is 2000 gt 5 speed and it's got about 65k miles right now but the car has a very bad idle. When I'm sitting still the car will dip to around 500 rpm then bounce up to almost 2k without me ever pressing the gas. What can cause this and is it expensive to fix?

Theres quite a few things it could be but i would start with IAC idle air control valve or tps throttle position sensor.

+1 you can just take off the IAC and clean it out spraying intake cleaner down it liberally. It's a common problem in these cars.
