You can get a ton of different options, but all come with forged rods and pistons. From there it all depends on what you want/need. Your best bet would be to go to their website and look around.

a short block is a very basic build coming with mostly just the block and rotating assembly. so a forged short block would have a forged rotating assembly. someone else add in whatever I'm missing but that's the gist of it.

How much would it be to throw in a set of heads? Maybe $2300?

Their cheaper options require you to send in your block and crank. But 2300 will get you a new block, cranks, pistons, rods, and everything assembled. Then I would go to modularheadshop.com and look around on there. Nick has several things marked down and at amazing prices. I dont see why you couldnt have the shortblock, heads, cams, springs and everything at your door for more than 4000

I was reading on mmr that they still use cast cranks. Eh.
Nick's heads run about $1700-2200 for stage II cams, springs, and port. That's not terrible I guess. Haha.
If I didn't have to pay rent and all my bills then I could afford it all! Haha. I could probably spread this build over two months.. Buy the engine this month and heads next month.. Then put it all back together. Eh.. This sucks.

I see where if you send your block in you can pay $300 and it gives you a 18month warranty and it covers shipping to mmr and back to you! So that means $1600+$300. So $1900 total with that warranty? Not bad at all. Then save up for the heads.. And I'll be all set!

I'm sorry to hear about your loss bro..I went through the same thing a few months ago.
I rebuilt mine for just over $3k. I replaced EVERYTHING! rods, pistons, all bearings, basically the entire bottom end. I had the heads rebuilt too. You could just rebuild it, learn a few things in the process, and have a brand new engine for just $3k. It would be better than spending $2500 on a used junk yard engine and not knowing anything about it. I would rebuild it and maybe gets cams, ported heads, and forge it if you have the extra money. I hope this helps man, if you have any questions about anything on my engine, I'll be glad to help.
Here are some pics of my build.

Little update. Have to go back to work in a different city so I'm done messin with it for now. Next on list is take off the heads and inspect where the damage is. If its the heads then I'm just gonna rebuild them and go forged internals and steel valves.

This is obviously biased, but why not go with a 97-98 Mark VIII motor? Its 4v, Romeo, COP, runs on the factory tune(you have to tune it to make good power..), and all you really need to do is delete EGR, knock sensors, and jimmy around with the heater hoses i'm pretty sure. A lot of Marks blow their trannys so you should be able to find a dead one with a good motor cheap. That way you have all your accesory parts ready should you hit a snag.

Alright, I've been at the point where the engine is taken apart enough to where I'm comfortable with taking it out of the car safely. What is the best way to go about getting it out? Should I use an engine(cherry picker) crane and pull it out the top, or is it easier to remove the bottom pieces and drop it out underneath? Suggestions or tips? Or even things to look out for before I pull it?
