My friends stang started like that if its comming from the front of the engine it might be the chain tensioner. Does it only do it under load or also when you rev it up?

I agree, if you decide to do this yourself replace it all, tensioners, guides, and chain because a worn guide can cause play in the chain causing chain splapp at times. When i had a noise like this and read a article that it was the chain causing a noise like that, the chain would be wore out where it meet the gear causing play which cause a ticking noise. Unforuntaly, long story short my problem was the cam bolt lost its TQ and allowing the sprocket to backed off and the noise I was hear was the cam sprocket whobble back and forth on the cam shaft until it broke.
