The specs are good. Both are an 8.8 rear end and 3.73 is what I'm looking for. If the gears clean and everything is straight, can I do this swap?

I dont see why not, if they are the same then sure I would assume. I dont use used gears because of the fact of hearing horror stories of making noises and such...both were installed correctly by a shop and someone that has been doing it for years. I rather just buy them out right new...but thats me.

Not grinding noises, just a roar/humming type noise from the rear end kinda like the noise you hear when you roll a bowling ball down the lane. This is all IMO and not saying it wont hurt but its just something I dont reuse.

What in the world would cause that noise?! If all the gears were fitted together you would think the only possible sound would be grinding...

Re: Would it be bad to take some ford explorer 3.73 gears that are 8.8 rear into a GT

My friend's dad installed his used gears in his car and told him that it might happen with the noise, the same guy that installed my new gears so he knows what he is doing and thats with new bearings and races and etc. He said its not always a bad thing or they arent installed right it just means that you will have to listen to the noise. He said its caused by where the teeth meet on the pinion and ring and how it was worn together. This is partly due to the gears being broke in on one setup and then being installed in used condition on another setup and not getting them exactly in the same spot as when they were orginally worn in....kinda understand what im saying? Now, this is a MATTER of opinion only so noone go busting my chops and saying its not true.

Pretty much what I was saying before you beat me too, on the explorer the wear pattern might be different then on your GT so its just a chance you take, one chance I don't want to take. Um, just depends my buddy has a camaro with turn downs and etc and well its loud and you can still hear it a little until he turns up the radio lol. IF it is a slight noise where you can only hear it a low speeds like 5 mph then you prolly won't hear it with a off road x pipe lol.

Yes, I'm sure someone is going to say there is nothing wrong with used gears and they have them installed on their car with no problems.I'm not saying dont get them I'm just giving you a heads up of something that MIGHT happen due to used gears and from what I have seen.
