Muffler vs Catback system

I was looking around the past few days for a new catback system and working off of a minuscule budget these days, im not sure if I can spend $600 on one. Now im just thinking about getting a couple of new mufflers put on instead.
My question is would there be any significant difference performance wise between getting just the muffler vs getting the whole catback system?

Re: Muffler vs Catback system

Another question I have, has anyone ever tried or heard good things about the summit catback? I just now saw one on their website for under $200. Thats a great price but its so much cheaper than all the others, it has me kinda leery. Any opinions?

Re: Muffler vs Catback system

Mufflers are supposed to be similiar to the Dynomax Super Turbo . From what I've read people seem quite happy with the system But you get what you pay for

A catback versus mufflers is your choice...personally I prefer a catback in the end, just easier on everyone. Look around at used catbacks that are in good condition, you can normally pick them up for a good savings.

Catback would scavenge more power.

Re: Muffler vs Catback system

I was in this same position just a little bit ago.

I was going to go just mufflers... but in the end, ended up putting in a whole new catback.

Now I know I'm not the end-all of opinions, but from dealing with mine, I'm very happy with the whole catback swap.

Just a note from experience.

pipe is pipe only if the size differs would it really matter. Sure some pipe is bent different and that might alter it some but not to bad

Re: Muffler vs Catback system

stock exhaust set ups are ok for some people. the down fall is crinkle bent, 2.25, and stock mufflers are the greatest, but is all stainless. most aftermarket exhasut set ups are mandrel bent and 99% are 2.5, the more expensive systems are stainless too. i recommend a cat back, but its up to you how much you want to spend.

Re: Muffler vs Catback system

I would definitely agree with Tiff there (Aidan_04) and say Catback over mufflers. I know I love my MangaFlows! I just think they sound better, although it's just a matter of choice.

Re: Muffler vs Catback system

Personally, if you just want sound, then get some weld-ins.

You could have an exhaust shop make you a custom exhaust and pick your muffler choice for cheap but it'll probably be aluminized steel that will rust.

I bought my Magnapack catback on Ebay for 350 dollars. Along with a MRT Catted H (both Stainless steel) for 350 bucks aswell. So 700 and I've got some good stuffs.

i second that. there really isnt much of a gain either in a catback versus just weld-in, maybe a couple hp at most. benefits of a catback being its fully reversible, you can swap over to stock at any time. weld-ins are a permanent modification to factory equipment.

honestly like above, if you just want sound, get just mufflers of your choice and have them welded in. Personally i loved the Spintechs on my 02 GT, most get magnaflow or the like. Flowmasters are popular and cheap as well.

Re: Muffler vs Catback system

i was in the same boat as you cat-back or mufflers. I choose mufflers. I HATE them. Stupidest choice ive ever made. Just ordered slp loudmouth for $500.
