under car tick

On my way to work today while stopped at a stop light i heard a tick. It got faster as i was accelerating. When i pulled in to work i popped the hood and the tick wasn't coming from anywhere engine wise, more like directly under the engine where the headers connect to the mid-pipe area. Is an exhaust leak in that area possible to cause a tick like that? Oh and i forgot to mention, if i lay into her a little i will get a backfire ocassionally, as well as smell exhaust through my vents. All this just recently started.

Any suggestions will help! Thank you all!

It sounds like an exhaust leak. Is your an automatic or a stick?

Ok I was gonna say, the best way to test it is to put the car under some load. Have you tried getting under the car while the engine was running and listening for it?

Thats what i was gunna try tomorrow morning. I know when i do put it under load it will backfire once then its ok after that. There is an exhaust smell coming through my vents if i put her under load too. So thats what pointed me to an exhaust leak

all the signs point towards it. If you want final reassurances find a big hill to drive up and put it in like 4th or 5th and just nail the gas and see if it seems to get worse
