need help... inner, outer, or ball joint?

have had some vibration from front end. a mechanic had my car (for something else) and noticed some play on right front tire; said it's probably the inner tie rod (with no real further inspection). basically all he did was rock tire back and forth, or in and out, on it's horizontal center line.

i've had the car up myself (no one to turn steering wheel while i was under unfortunately) and i see same symptom. no movement in straight up and down motion, or trying to rock tire back and forth on vertical axis.

before i buy parts and tackle job, anybody confirm above notion, or know how i can tell for sure? thanks!
