Reading VIN

Can some one help me? The 7th digit is for the engine code but the car i am looking at has "x" for this ? The car is 96' GT Conv. & what i have read is it should be a "W" so what could the X be???

Sorry it is the 8th not 7th digit.

there is a site on fords website that breaks down vin information and I cant find out where I saved my info at... if i can turn it up i will post the link

Hmm are you sure you are counting it correct? For a 96 it should only be a W or a V.

Atleast according to my Haynes manual.

correct kiljosh this should be a "w" as it is a GT 4.6ltr. The "v" is for the cobra model.

Just found out from a site on ford vin#'s. The "x" stands for 4.6ltr dohc v8. Now this was for all 4th generation models. But other sites i have been on state it should be a "w".Hmmm
