Mustang serpentine belt

I have a 98 GT my problem is my serpentine belt. Whenever it's fully on the AC pully it makes a loud squeaking sound and after 20 seconds adjusts itself a little off. Check out the picture. Should I be worried?

Re: Mustang serpentine belt

Yeah I would be worried because eventually it might start to shread the belt. This is just a wild guess but if all other pulleys look good and arent wobbling and its line I say the AC clutch/pulley might be bad.

When the ac is off what does it do? Does it stay on the ac pulley correctly?

Re: Mustang serpentine belt

A good chance the a/c clutch is bad....maybe there is too much play somewhere in there that when you engage and disengage the A/c the pulley moves too much and knocks it out of line and thats they the belt is on the edge.

I dont think the compressor itself is bad, just the clutch. You might be able to just buy the clutch but when I worked at autozone and the dealership all I saw was you had to buy the whole thing. Check other things before going buying anything...

I not saying this is it just trying to give you an area to check/look at because when you turn the a/c on you hear a noise from it right? Check and make sure there is good tension on the belt then check the belt tensioner as well.

Check the tensioner too. It should be rock steady, not hopping up and down under torque, too much will cause belt shift, and belt slippage. It's 2 o' clock from the AC pulley.

Re: Mustang serpentine belt

And the belt is lined up perfect on the other pulleys, today I tried to re-adjust several times and everytime I started the car there was a squeak for about 2 seconds then it was back like that, it drives and runs fine but when I am at idle it jumps between 500-1000 RPMS

Re: Mustang serpentine belt

So the belt tensioner itself was okie and doesnt have any play?

I want to say its something with the ac pulley causing the belt to jump...but thats my opinion.
