a whining/grinding coming from what sounds like the transmission. what could it be?

I have a 2000 mustang gt 5 speed and out of no where 2day going down the highway im hearing a whining/grinding noise thought it was jus a semi or something but it would only happen when i was pressing the gas. I dont usually hear it til 3rd but gets louder the higher the gear no matter the speed you are going. What could be the problem?

I had the same happen to my brothers mustang. Turned out to be the rear end i.e. ring and pinion gear. That was wat was making the loud noises on his i would check yours maybe u low on diff fluid or like his needed to be replaced and shimmed correctly

Turn your head to the side when it happens. If it gets louder in your rear facing ear it's probably rear end.
