help

I have a 96 gt and whenever I turn the wheel, it groans. Just like a power steering pump going out but its coming from around alternator. Didn't have much time to check last night (rain). Its not as loud as a bad pump usually is but its annoying. It don't make the noise until u turn the wheel. I'm going to check out later today but thought Id get some ideas from you all. Thanks

Given the age of the car it's highly possible that the PS pump is bad or going bad, but I could also be a leak. My 98 ford ranger did the same thing the ps line was leaking and had caused the pump to fail because sadly I was too young and uneducated about car repair at the time I just kept driving it the way it was. It made one helluva noise when the wheel was turned though.

Re: help

The ps pump has a new tag on it. Previous owner replaced. Fluid hasn't moved. It just sounds like its coming from alternator. That's what has me stumped. No noise til u move wheel. Fluid is light red color.

Wow that's puzzling. The only thing I can think of is a bad alternator pulley maybe? My guess is that when ur turning the wheel, and the ps pump has a load on it, it is throwing the alternator pulley off balance. Like I said this is a hunch but it's relatively inexpensive fix if that's the problem. Hope this helps!

Re: help

Its not that loud. I replaced squeaky ball joint today and checked tie rods and all that was good. But rain cut me short on time. I was thinking filter may be clogged a little. If previous owner replaced pump and filter is in resevior it would be old. Its worth a try if that's where filter is? I have to do some reading on it.
