I have a 1999 gt that has the standard mustang sound system not the Mach 460. If it is possible to exchange the standard for a Mach 460 would it be worth it? Or would an aftermarket system be better and/or easier to install

Go with aftermarket. The old 460 amps are not as compatible with more modern speakers. I have a 460. Get the 460 wedges and install them for nostalgia only.

On the other side, twin amp 460 are nice. It would be tough to wire them in. Here's a link where you can find really small high amps.

I like these guys and they ship anywhere. They'll help you. They know mustang owners want to keep original systems not get sold on new equipment.

Realy the 460 is bad, i had it when i bough my car, swaped that after a few days of testing just to give it a shot, and even though I loved the way amps were screwed on top of the trunk, leaving a decent space, I did install my twin 12 inch subs and all that came with it, little trunk... but big sound quality at least.
Also it would be so hard to install the original 460 wires... and they are kinda weird and not convenient.

As already said, the tweeters on the top of the doors are nice, well the rack... not the tweeters itself, though with crossover they are... useable...
