A/C will make it JUMP, JUMP!

What do y'all think would be the cause/reason that when I turn my a/c knob from MAX to MIX the car shudders and dips drastically in RPMs and at one time died?

Mine makes something similar. I can have it at full blast in regular a/c but as soon as i switch to max the rpms drop and sometimes the car dies. Once smoke came out of the exhaust. Havent been using max a/c since.
