Re: Getting 6MPG and Backfiring .. Please Help

Have you done anything recently to your vehicle? Anything at all?

That code is a wide spread basic code of P161 02 sensor.

Things to check for;

Vacuum leak
MAF sensor (clean it)
CAI (over oiled?)

That's rough bro. If I was there I could help you, but on something like this you have start doing the process of elimination. Good luck.

When mine did that I threw the code for the 02 sensor ( no cats on the car though) and turned out to be my plugs. Doubt that would be it but just trying to help

Re: Getting 6MPG and Backfiring .. Please Help

When this happened to me on my 06 all I did was clean and oil the filter. I put the filter back on and it started doing the exact same thing yours is doing. I cleaned the oil off the MAF sensor and tried to clean the filter, but it kept giving me the same codes. So I bought a new filter (CAI) and put it on. No problems after that. I cleared all the codes and it runs perfect and normal gas mileage.

Recommend;

1. Clean MAF
2. Clean TB
3. Put old filter back on
4. Clear codes
5. Start her up and see how she's running

---------- Post added at 07:35 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:33 AM ----------

I can guaranty this problem is your filter!

Also, If you done some work on it, double-check that you've got all the emissions, etc. connected correctly.

Bet you got a vacuum leak around your plenum and throttle body. Possibly something hooked up wrong. Double check there. Just for giggles did you check the gaskets? Use new ones or the old ones?

You cleaned all the connections, but did you clean your MAF sensor? And did it start doing it right after you put your new plenum and TB on?

Could the TB and/or plenum be damaged? Cracked or warped allowing leakage or unmetered air?

Re: Getting 6MPG and Backfiring .. Please Help

I had a few of our trucks in our fleet,,they are the 3 v 5.4 ,,had problems throwing a cam code and surging,,bad gas mileage..I ended up checking for a alternator a/c leak,,it had excessive a/c voltage,,and was interfering with the cam circuit...I know its a long shot ,,and these are newer,,but had several cases..I disconnected the wire off the back of the alternator and let it idle,,the surging went away,,and the code didnt come back..I think i had 42 volts A/C not DC coming across the battery..

Put your stock tb and plenum back on and see what happens.

It relearned itself. You probably added the parts and never reset the computer to relearn itself. Im also assuming its a stock tuned computer with no tuner so that would explain your backfiring and car running sluggish

That is definitely something you would want to do if you changed the TB and plenum. Idle relearn fuel trim. And you might have stumbled on the fix by disconnecting the battery for whatever other reason.

You could take the alternator off and have Autozone or the like check it. But, as maldog said, prolly not the prob. Maybe you PCM is the problem? Have you had a tuner flash a tune on this car before? Maybe the tune is jacked up.

Most important... Did it have these probs before you swapped the TB & plenum? Did it run okay when you first got it?

Put the stock one back on. If it doesn't do it then suspect a problem with it. Also try doubling up on gaskets it still sounds like a leak somewhere.

---------- Post added at 07:16 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:14 PM ----------

When you disconnected the battery it reset everything and it takes driving atleast 25 miles for it to fully relearn. What happened was the car went into relearn mode and ran fine til it settled. Now it's relearned everything the leak is showing back up..

My buddy has an 04 gt and had a similar problem you're having except he had a cam sensor code. It was backfiring and running poorly. We replaced the alternator and it solved the problem.

---------- Post added at 09:12 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:50 PM ----------

Also he didnt get this cam sensor code until he washed his engine. So if you cleaned your engine lately this could possibly be your problem.
