Diesel noise

Ever since I got my auto 04 gt the engine makes a slight ticking noise which I heard is normal for the 4.6 and it sounds like a diesel. I've also cracked the stock intake manifold twice. I've already put a whole new timing set on. Any ideas??

It only happens when idling

Could be a exhaust leak, but normally It will get louder when you accelerate. Or it could be a lifter or something. How many miles are on it? Any mods like headers or anything?

I'll check the oil fill cap in the am but I just did plugs a couple weeks ago I don't think it's missing but you can hear a backfire every do often

Sometimes it will hesitate and bog a little when I really get on it and sometimes it will run great but it always make that noise at idle

It's sounds just like mine did I changed the Pcv and hose with brand new ones from latemodelrestorations.com and fixed it. It definitely sounds like a vacuum problem.

I'll look into that. I was also thinking it might have something to do with the dorman intake manifold that keeps cracking

Yup, maybe the noise is cause of the rough idle and the vacuum sound (wherever it's leaking) together.

Re: Diesel noise

Wish i could help but I can give you some advice to find the leak. What I do is get a can of brake cleaner and lighty spray around areas where they might be a leak for example vac lines, intake, etc. If the car reacts then there is a leak, just dont spray on things that might ignite the brake cleaner or you will be on here asking whats the best hair grower lol. Thats how I do it esp when installing a new intake and CAI....good luck.

I'll try spraying around a little. I might end up having to change the intake.

It's probably cam phazers, I had a 05 expedition that made the same noise, dealer fixed it under warranty, fixed the noise. it had a 5.4L but 4.6's have them too!

I'll have to look at the donut gasket. I can't see or smell any smoke around there. And I think only the 05+ 3v have cam phasers
