ok thanks! will i have to remove the alternator bracket so i can remove the aluminum cross pipe that bridges over to the other side of the cooling system? or will i just remove the top part of the thermostat?

The bolts to take the crossover off are under the manifold so you have to take the hole manifold to fix it. The gasket between the crossover isnt sold so you might have to use some black rtv. I had a similar problem but on mine the plastic piece right under the thermostat broke on the inside

So should I probably have a mechanic do the work? What's the difficulty level?

Do that yourself!!! Take your time. I'm pretty sure you can remove it without pulling the manifold, but refer to a chiltons for conformation

Chilton and Hayne's, they are instruction manuals you can buy at auto parts stores for cars.

I has the same thing happens to me but mine was in a different place
I'd suggest doing the removal and all yourself it really is quite simple just take your time and make sure the Seal isn't broken like mine was and I had to replace the whole intake manifold I'll put a picture of how mine broke tomorrow so you can just make sure it's not that

Re: Help me fix an Anti-freeze leak!

I figured it out!!! its actually nothing to do with any gaskets or seals or the thermostat! Its actually a common problem with these models! What it is is that black piece under the thermostat is part of the UIM and its cracked and so the UIM has to be replaced! the new one im getting from AM has the lower thermostat housing and cross over pipe built into it so its gonna be a fix that is definitely for the better! If this hasn't happened to you yet it probably will so i suggest replacing your stock UIM with one from AM!

It happened twice on my old 98. First time in the same place second one cracked in the back where the heater hose clamped on. My 01 now has been replaced too. It was a recall from ford at one point.
