New transmission

I'm getting pretty tired of taking heat for having an automatic tranny, so I was wondering what would be the best transmission that I could get for a decent price? Thanks in advance.

Re: New transmission

lets just say, it would be cheaper to get 4.10 gears, chip, tune, case of beer, a few dates with the girlfriend, a video game system, and a couple trips to the strip club.

not only will you get all those nice things, but your car will perfrom almost on par with a manual. it won't be the same, but itll definitely shut up your friends.

Re: New transmission

So their really that expensive. Wow. Well sweet I was thinking abut it and wouldn't one with a shift kit and a chip shift better due to the fact that it's being told when to do it? Yeah you forgot to mention a shift kit.

Re: New transmission

in the end unless you are attached to the car selling it and buying a manual may be easier, and smarter as far as car value goes

Re: New transmission

Well, I don;t really want to sell it and I'm going to have the car for a very long time so that's out of the question. What would a good ballpark be for a new transmission?

My buddy just payed almost $1800 for a tko600 after shipping. Then you have to factor in all the fab work and other parts you will need. Just buy 4.10 gear's get it tuned and call it a day.

Re: New transmission

I'd suggest finding a 6 speed unless you can find a real cheap 5 speed.

Re: New transmission

i just baught a rebuilt tranny from Smart Parts Auto it cost me $900. I baught a tr3650 have had no problems with it. You would need a lot more than just a tranny. So your probably going to spend anywhere from $2000 to $2500 So yeah 4:10s definetly cheaper

Re: New transmission

I have a '99 GT auto tranny, and also though on the idea of a manual. I was thinking on a T-56 I think it is 6 speed.

Which is better 6 or 5 speed? It's been ages since I have driven a manual trans car. Last one was a crappy Sentra, then came my Pony and life was goooooood.

In case the manual trans needs a shorter driveshaft what kind of brands produce descent performance ones ready to bolt on?

Thanks and hope you let us know how it when with your tranny conversion.

Re: New transmission

Hey Mustang GT HO,sounds like you really have your heart set on a manual trany. GO FOR IT.It's only time & money. If you got the time & got the money, than do it.When everything is installed ,all the kinks worked out with everything that go's with the trany. You'll be happy you did it. Best of luck

Re: New transmission

Yeah I really want to do it, so instead of getting all the little things for the car I am just going to save up for a T-56 and drop that bad boy in!!!!

Re: New transmission

When you finish with the trany, then you can start with all the other mods. And dont forget. When changing a transmission especially in your case, going from auto to manual make sure you get it from a reputable source that offers a good warranty. Go get'm kid'o.

Re: New transmission

just build the auto... they are strong as all hell... i actually think they are rated at a higher HP (torque) then the 5 speeds... ive read 450hp pretty easily... if you want a consistent track car... put 4.10s and get it shifting harder....

Re: New transmission

chasing down all the parts, the install wasnt that bad at all. we have pulled my trans out of my mustang more than enough times to be comfortable doing it. he is suppose to be doing a full write up with all pics soon, if/when he gets around doing it i can send a copy to you.

Re: New transmission

just plan ahead of time, figure the route you want to go and then go with it. choose the trans type, clutch kit, clutch size, what flywheel you want to run, power you plan on running, i suggest an aluminum d/s unless you just plan on changing yolk, shifter, etc. the more you have planned, the easier it is when it comes time to do it. you will have to send your tuner out to a shop that can unlock the manual provisions. houston performance did his diablo.
