Upgrade to 31 Spline LSD and axles?

I want to get a LSD for my 97 GT but having a terrible time finding a 28 spline available. 31 spline seem to be cheaper but the additional cost of axles will be required. Is it worth the upgrade or just be patient and wait for a 28 spline to come available? Car is used for everyday driving. I have a set of new 4.1.1 gears that I will install once I get the LSD figured out.

Might have to go to a parts store like oreilys or autozone to find a factory replacement... Or buy a rebuild kit with new clutches

Your car currently has one. There are youtube videos on how to rebuild them, it's not that difficult

Your right about 28 splines being hard to find. The market is going 31. You'll notice that 28 spline duffs are hard to find too. Upgrading now is a good plan.

I bought 28 spline moser first, then my diff conked out on the added hp even after the rebuild, so to save my investment, I bought eaton tru trac diff to match.

My understanding that factory install on the 97 is 28 spline. Anyway to easily check?

Only way I know is to pull the axel. 97 GTs are 28s. I own one. I have disassembled every part of it. Don't worry, when you have the $ and you begin the repair the tech will let you know. Go 31s if you can. Good news is moser 28s can handle slicks too.

Way to check is your Ford dealer.

Ohh I only wish I had a Ford dealer in a reasonable distance. Forgot to mention in in Japan.

Changing out the axles is pretty much a straight forward operation. I have mechanical sense but never done that work.

Well, stop second guessing. Google crown ford, Fayetteville, North Carolina, and ask for Gary. Select parts in the phone menu. Have your vin ready. Anyone at the counter will answer your questions. They never let you out the door without alternative solutions. Give it a try, or PM me your vin an ill find out. Easy.
