Broken OIL PUMP

I recently had a oil pump failure on the intestate resulting in a blown engine. Is this a common problem? my car is a 02 GT with just 29K, If I decide to put another engine from ford in it should I upgrade the oil pump before installing?

Re: Broken OIL PUMP

That is just a freak thing that happened.....oil pumps don't go bad too often...if you want to upgrade the pump you can but it's not necessary

Re: Broken OIL PUMP

Never heard of it happening. Its a gear driven unit directly off of the crank. Not to many pieces that can go bad.

Re: Broken OIL PUMP

The gear broke off. I heard if you modify a 4.6 a little to much this will happen. I wish I heard this before I started, A new pump is a lot cheaper than the 6 grand the dealership quoted me for a long block!

Re: Broken OIL PUMP

I have heard of people putting in Cobra oil pumps to prevent broken gears. They are supposed to be made with better materials. Looking back I don't think I made enough power to have this problem. I only had 302 crank hp and 355 lbs of torque, maybe mine was just plain weak. For all of you on here with big hp numbers you may want to look into this so your car doesn't suffer from the same fate mine did.
