255's should fit fine on the stokc 8 inch wide rims, keep in mind that EVERY tire maker is different in width, there is no uniform width... (which is sad since XX mm is... XX mm... but there are no restrictions on it) so some tire brands will be more narrow compared to others.
255/45/17's should work, dont need a 50 series sidewall~ that will be to tall.
Not a chance....the biggest tire I would run on a stock wheel is a 255 like your lookin at. I've seen people put 275's on a stock rim but its a bad idea, the tire is too wide for the rim.
Each tire manufacturer usually gives a recommended wheel width range for their tire so I would say go by that
