So I'm going to be doing an IRS swap with a guy from a local forum and I was wondering how straightforward of a swap it is. He has an 03 Cobra and I've heard that I will need to swap a flange or something like that? If anybody has some insight on doing this, that would be great.

I will. I'm doing it this weekend so it wont be too long. The swap seems pretty straightforward.

I believe he will need the cradle for the irs as well as the shocks/struts that go along the rear end ofcouse which isnt a solid rear end but a diff with cv axles and upper and lower control arms. Im sure ill be corrected if incorrect and you will get your answer soon enough but its not a bolt on and go from what i know

From all the write-ups I've seen it bolts right up. The only problem is with 03/04 rear ends you need a special u-joint that fits both flanges.

+1 it's a better handling suspension for racing than a live axle and should allow for me to tune it towards my driving style.

The guy I'm trading with currently has the Magnaflow catback with Bassani tips. If I don't like it then I'll buy some Bola Stinger mufflers.

I will definitely do that. I'm just trying to decide if I should cut off a coil or not because he has the stock springs still.

Me neither. I'll probably just leave it and wait to find a good deal on some rear springs.

I've just got to look for a guy who did a SRA swap and doesn't need his rear springs.

Well yesterday was the day we had planned on trading but Colorado had a different idea. We ended up getting a nice blizzard so we cancelled and are trying to find another day to do it.

You will need the irs assembly. All mounting bolts plus the rear mount assembly (bolts to where your quad shocks are currently). Shocks and springs plus shock bolts. You will also need to swap pinion flanges or driveshaft end joints (i swapped pinion flanges as the cobra comes with a much stronger setup and I wanted to keep it).

I've done a few of these so feel free to ask any questions.

Awesome thanks. I'm just going to swap u-joints because I don't want to go through the process of setting my pinion bearing pre-load.

That will leave you with the stronger setup too. Smart man.

Well I figured I would give an update, since we had to cancel a couple weeks ago because of snow, we're gonna try for this Saturday. Unfortunately he wizened up to the fact that he would be getting the weaker flange so he ordered the differential side of the flange. I should be picking up the drive shaft side tomorrow.

Well I get a 31 spline rear diff with carbon clutches, that's a good enough upgrade for me. I want to keep the 3.55s because I'm already almost hitting 5th on the straight at my local track.

Yeah. If I had a different tranny then I would think about a steeper gear.

Well it's been one hell of a day, we got everything swapped thankfully but ran into all sorts of snags. Took about 10hours by the time I locked up the shop and headed home. The exhaust sounds great and the suspension is definitely smoother. I'll get some before and after pictures tomorrow after I clean it.
