What makes a clicking/grinding sound??

I drove out of town today about 2 hours away. When I arrived, I stopped by a store to get a drink. As I pulled in, I heard a grinding sound then a click then again and again. It was coming from the front driver wheel. I think. I tried looking, but didn't see anything. Then it stopped. When I made it back, I heard it again. What could this be? It almost sounds like bad cv axles, but we don't drive front wheel drive cars. I need help.

I fixed that problem. Apparently there is something else wrong. I got to find it. I'm going crazy here.
