3.8 to 4.6

Has anyone ever had a 99-04 Mustang V6 3.8 and put in a 4.6?
If you have can you please tell me all the parts that i would need to do this swap?
example: Coolant Reservoir, mid-pipe, computer.....

Oh and I have an 03 Mustang V6 with 5speed. would the 4.6 bolt up to my transmission?

Thanks Guys!

As far as using your stock transmission it can be used to bolt to a 4.6 but you will need a transmission plate adapter to bolt your trans to the 4.6 because the 3.8 and 4.6 have different bolt patterns.

As far as telling you what you will need to complete the swap there is no sure fire way to say, all engine swaps are different. There are multiple ways of doing stuff like for instance making your own engine mounts. Moving the position of your tranny could mean you will need a different drive shaft and no one would know what size you would need unless you knew how to measure for a new one.

My point is if this is your first engine swap I recommend getting as much of the orginal 4.6 equipment as you can, to include a 4.6 trans, to do your swap and ensure that you finish it and dont just have a ripped up car sitting in your garage for months on end because you cant get something to workout.

Another tip pay attention to what kind of computer you get and make sure it is specific to manual or auto trans.

To save yourself a head ache and save yourself from wasting money remember its always nice to see that the engine trans your installing works well before you install it. That way when you are finished with the installation and have everything in place you know it should work and not have to go back and figure out if why it wont start is somthing you did or if you have a bad motor. Crown Victoria's would make for a good cheap donor car for your swap.

I can help you with your swap one step at a time if you have any more questions.

If you want a V8 Mustang, buy a V8 Mustang. You don't just swap the motor/trans. You need:

-Engine
-Trains
-ENTIRE WIRING HARNESS
-Fuel system
-PCM

And that's just the start. You SHOULD also swap the suspension as well. Honestly unless you have a full donor car I wouldn't bother and even then... you could probably sell yours and be into a GT for less than you'd spend on the swap.

Yeah but I want the 4v 03 cobra engine my stock automatic transmission will not bolt up to that and I wouldn't want a car with 400 hp without a stick and a cobra with 80000 miles will still cost Me like 18000 dollars

First off an automatic makes a terminator FASTER in a straight line. All the fastest 1/4 cars are autos and going to a 4R75w from the T-56 is very common among 03/04 Cobra owners who want a faster ET. So is swapping the IRS for a SRA. Second, your best bet to put a Terminator setup in your V6/GT/Bullitt/Mach is to get a wrecked donor Termi and swap EVERYTHING.

Honestly a $18k-$20k Cobra or a 2011 Coyote going for around the same price is going to be more cost effective and I say this from experience.

You could find a totaled donor cobra for 10-12k probably. But they don't show up that often. As everyone here has said, you're better buying a cobra flat out. It will be less money unless you already have mad skills and a full shop.

Back in the day, when 03/04 Cobras were lower mileage and a bit more common you could get a totaled wreck with a good engine/trans for $8k. This was back in the mid-late 2000s mind you. Nowadays... well dude posted the link to how much just the engine is going for on the evilbays.

Donor for $4k-$6k... you'd have to see what is wrong with it. It might have a crunched IRS or trans.

Donor is the best and ONLY way to go when doing a conversion. A more and more popular conversion these days is the modfox. Ppl grab a 4 banger stanger notchback, a 96-98 NPI donor car, convert the fox completely to modular/OBD2, do the PI swap and have a 280whp 3000 lb notch for dirt cheap.
