Oil Capacity

So i have a 01 Gt with the 4.6 2v. Last oil change i did the car took 6 quarts to read full on dipstick. Now i know ts been a common question on here with many answers whats the true amount needed? I tried 5 quarts like the owners manual said but it said a quart low. Thanks in advance!

The original recommended fill for the 4.6L was 5.0 qt; however independent testing in late 2000 revealed some oil starvation during high-G (VERY high-G) cornering and Ford increased the recommend capacity to 6.0 qt in 2002 (you can download the owner's manuals here to see this change).

The recommended fill and the dipstick markings were the only changes--you '01 may be late MY production or perhaps someone changed the dipstick...

It's the dipstick markings. This was not a change made by throwing a switch overnight, but was phased in during production. I have seen early to even mid-2002 MY engines with the old dipstick; it depends on when the engine was assembled--not the car.

6.0 qt is the recommended fill for all 4.6L Mustangs--there's a TSB out there but I cannot find it just now...

Always put 6 qts..if your dipstick reads full at 5qts, get yourself the new updated dip stick, grabbed mine from ford for 20 bucks or something..my car was built in January of 02 and I had to grab the new dipstick to get a correct reading

Or just get a 3-corner file, drill a hole, or get Jaws (from Janes Bond, not the shark) to bite it for you and make a new mark.

One could even perhaps remember how much above the old mark represents "full"...

it was independent testing, not Ford, that identified the issue--however Ford did do us service by acknowledging it and changing their recommendation and the dipstick...
